Kaitlyn is 6

Kaitlyn turned 6 today. She loves crafts, playing with friends, playing games and coloring, so there's never really been a particular toy or theme of toys that she has been into. I thought maybe this year that she would like to have the American Girl experience so I ordered a catalog for her, only to be told, 'Mom, I'm too old for dolls.' Well, that threw that idea out the window! I ended up getting her something we could do together, a book called Where the Sidewalk Ends. I read her the Light in the Attic a few months back over several days. She loves to have me read a handful of pages before she goes to bed and we laugh at the silly poems.
There was lots of anticipation leading up to this day and lots of preparation for the events of the weekend. The celebrations started on Friday with a group celebration at school of the summer birthdays. She wanted Krispy Kreme donuts (not pupcakes). On Saturday, we had her birthday party with several friends and family at the New Children's Museum downtown. It was very fun and everyone had a great time! Later the same day one of her classmate's, Samantha, also had a birthday party across the street from her house at a park in Carmel Valley. The same girls were at both parties and it is neat to see the girl's forming relationships that could possibly last for years. Today was Kate's actual birthday and all she wanted was to go to Grammy B's and have her cousins, Taylor and Madison, come to play. We started the day going to church where they were having a graduation celebration with several jumpies in the back of the property and lots of food. The girls stayed after church to play and then went back to Grammy's to play the rest of the day, which involved a slip n' slide, bubble bath, brownies with whooped cream and lots of laughing.
Kate knew that Grammy and Grampa had a present for her at their house waiting for her. As we were driving to church this morning, she said 'I wonder what Grammy and Grampa got for me?' Yesterday at lunch Grampa had told her the dimensions of the box for some anticipation, so she was thinking about the size and what the contents could possibly be and after a brief pause, she said, 'I bet it's a big hug'. What a sweet thought! That's my Kate - I can't believe my little love bug is 6. What adventures will happen this summer?
